Basic Homemade Bread 


Ingredients

 2 loaves
  1. 1 package active dry yeast
  2. 2-1/4 cups warm water
  3. 3 tablespoons sugar
  4. 1 tablespoon salt
  5. 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  6. 6-1/4 cups all purpose flour

Steps

  1. Prepare and weigh out all the ingredients and set aside

  2. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar, salt, oil and 3 cups flour. Mix until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, to form a soft dough.

  3. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, approximately 8-10 minutes. However, the more you knead, the softer the bread will turn out. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top.

  4. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

  5. Once doubled in size, it should look like this....

  6. Punch down the dough and turn it onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough in half, shaping each piece into a loaf. Place in greased pans. Cover and let rise for about 30-45 minutes.

  7. Bake for 220 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes or until golden brown and bread sounds hollow when tapped.

  8. Remove the bread from the baking pans to wire racks to cool.

  9. When it has cooled completely, cut into slices and enjoy!
